Nothing like a landmark to evoke a sense of place.
Gateway Arch, the iconic landmark of St. Louis that sits along the Mississippi River, is known as Gateway to the West.
Kansas City native Calvin Trillin once clarified that KC is the true gateway, opining that St. Louis is actually "the exit from the east."
When faced with local criticism that state funds should be spent on things more practical than an Arch, its Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen responded that "spiritual things" were equally important.
(And, of course, he is right.)
Cielo Bar, in the Four Seasons, is the right St. Louis venue to drink a sunset prayer (the Vesper).
