Center of gravity for the Stanleys during the Middle Ages.

12th century Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul:
One of only three churches in the UK that have both a tower and a steeple.

Many illustrious Stanleys (from the Lathom, Ormskirk, and Burscough area of Lancashire) lay buried here.

The Stanley family, originally from Stoneley in Staffordshire, descend from Adam de Aldithly (later anglicized to Audley), who came to England from Normandy in 1066 with William the Conqueror.
